Week 9: Development and Refinement
Updated: Dec 11, 2022
Primary Research
As I was able to visit the church, I made notes and took pictures. Few of these photos relate to the points that I have written down.
Gothic triangle arches at the entrance.
Glass stain art (Use of bright colors).
Tiles have warm tones.
The chapel within the church has patterns that are similar to Arabian carpet.
Wooden furniture.
Glass Painting used to tell stories.
Need of plants in the church (as an involvement of nature).
Applying SCAMPER Method
Since I wanted to Substitute and Combine the structure, I choose the entrance area and tried changing it in 3 different ways.

The first drawing (Brown shades) shows how I wanted to bring the interior to outside by drawing tiles which did not work. The second and third sketches shows nature being used. Although it did not completely look good I still went with that plan and tried making it better by adding different organic elements. This idea also relates to the concept I am currently researching about, which is Biophilic Design.

Since I will be focusing on details the color palette varies but they fall in the same shades of greens and browns. I was able to minimize it to the color palette below by using Adobe Capture.

Concertina Sketchbook Layout
I choose certain angles from the photos I had taken and combined it into a layout which will be easier for me as I will be able to select a specific side and make changes.

It was difficult to follow this layout as some of them were not working. Like in Side 2, page 6, I wanted to make the top part of the church look like a sea shell but the details were not accurate (circled in black).
My main idea for the concertina sketchbook is bringing nature close to people by the structure I have chosen.
This also includes looking into biophilic designs and researching methods to draw nature related elements using watercolor paints.

Progress
Below are some pictures and videos on how I have started my concertina sketchbook.

Reflection
Since I wanted to use the skills I learnt throughout this course to my fullest potential I am choosing to focus on details to make it look more realistic.
For the upcoming week, I will begin by tracing and sketching my final layout. Then start watercolor rendering on each side of the concertina sketchbook and slowly add features.
