Introduction

In this blog I will be talking about experimentation and works that were successful. I will also talk about which media/material is easier to work with.

Experimentation

Monument Valley

Since my very first inspiration was the game, Monument Valley; I used the REMIX method to combine and make a drawing with color palette from the mood board.

Fig.1: Inspired by Monument Valley (my work)
Fig.3: Slight error

Watercolors is my first choice of equipment when it comes to drawing which is why I wanted to try my first piece without taking any risk. I also used gold paint to highlight patterns and certain structure.

Although, this piece does seem successful there were simple errors regarding geometry (Fig.2). I will be making more work which will be inspired by the game using the same media as well.

Tishk Barzanji

His artwork is illusionistic, bright and geometric. I used these aspects to create a sketch. I added more lines to make it interesting and used a black card to emphasize shadows.

Fig.5: Tishk Barzanji's Work
Fig.6: Lighter (dull) version, after spraying it.

I did not focus on details as much since I wanted to play with color that were not part of my palette and spot differences. There are many different lines that destroy perspective and creates illusion which I tried to use in my work.

Since I used soft pastels the color started to smudge. This is where I used Fixative Spray which made the work dull (Fig.6).

Movie (Inspiration)

Movies are imaginative and some have scenes which relates to Utopia or is Utopia (a dreamlike place). And I took inspiration from one of the scenes and used SCAMPER.

Fig.7: My work
Fig.8: Inspiration (Movie- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2)
Fig.9: Trial Work

Although this piece does not have any color present, it still gives out the feeling of Utopia. I wanted to use white to learn about tone and how essential shadows are. The challenge I faced was shading (for 3D effect) since I was using white fine liners.

As using white fine liners was my first time, I tired creating and experimenting with it on another work (Fig.9) which was not as successful as Fig.7.

Mystic Prince (Webtoon)

After my movie inspired work was successful I wanted to incorporate the same style by using gold paint. The sketch resembled to scenes from this webtoon.

Fig.11: Mystic Prince (webtoon)

I wanted to capture it's essence by using gold paint like how the artist has used it to highlight in their panel. But the patterns and design in this work does not unite and because this was my first trial I learnt from my errors. I will use what I learnt, in my next piece of work-

  • Use patterns that unify the work

  • Shade more lightly using cleaner lines.

Reflection

During experimentation my most successful work was inspired by monument valley and a movie's scene (fig.1 and fig.7). Although, they are not my final collection.

Next week, I will create more pieces with the method/techniques I learnt from this week. I would like to use the theme 'Bringing feeling of Utopia' in my art work whilst refining and continue with this concept further into the next cycle.

Further Experimentation

In this blog I will further continue to experiment with individual structures that will make up 3 different space. I will be able to choose between them as my final outcome.

Idea 1: Fairy Fantasy

  • Fig.1: Main Structures
  • Fig.2: Smaller Mushrooms

The main structure of this space are the mushrooms made out of clay which I finished painting using the colour palette from the mood board.

I did not want to use the same material again as I wanted to show variation within a space. Hence, for the smaller mushrooms I used the method of quilling.

Fairies are always imagined to be living deep inside an enchanted forest; hence to keep the concept alive I used branches of wood.

Idea 2: Energy giving Crystals

  • Fig.3: Experiment 1
  • Fig.4: Experiment 2
  • Fig.5: Experiment 3
  • Fig.6
  • Fig.7

Although this idea revolves around crystal it did not convey the concept clearly. This is when I came across the concept of iridescent.

I was able to experiment (Fig.3, 4 and 5) and came to the conclusion of including it to my imaginary space since it has patterns that reflects energy waves. I was also able to finish painting all the crystals.

Idea 3: Nature is Gold

The trees in this space will be colored in gold representing the importance of nature. But to bring the concept together I also had to add something that is black and white. To experiment I painted a few branches gold and added paper flakes in each trial which gave different result out of which Fig.8 and Fig.9 were the best.
