Week 7: Experimentation

Group Competition
This week in our class we were divide into three groups; green, blue and pink. I was a part of the green group which had 6 people including me. I was assigned as the group leader and we were placed in the classroom itself which is why we got a difficult model to draw.
We place the model with a white background on a table then placed a graph sheet under the model. We mapped out a square in order to not move it out of that or disturb it as we draw.
First, I drew the grid to get the proportion but it got confusing as I started to outline the model. After a while I tried aligning the lines with the grid so I could get straight lines which did work and then I continued using the grid. The grid may not seem helpful at first but later on it helped me with my proportion and scale.
After drawing the main sketch I was able to shade it easily which gave it more dimension. Since the paper was A3 there was a lot of negative space which I could have avoided by making the sketch bigger. Since there was time limit I did not make it too big or I would not have had any time to shade it.
Group critique
At the end of the week we had an anonymous group critique where we were able to point out places to improve and see the improvements we could do in our drawings too.
First we were to write the improvements we want to see in our drawings. Then we changed our seat to other groups and observed their drawing. Since we were told not to write our name on the sketch we made, it was all anonymous.
This gave me chance to see the drawings and the different styles my classmates you when they draw. Some have not done a lot of shading, while others have given more importance to shading. It was a study of design more than group critique for me.
After half an hour discussion we went back to our seats and saw the tips we were given by our classmates.
Mine focused a lot on giving it more tone and shadow which I agree with since there are not much dark tones when the model did have it. I was only able to do the basic shading. I can now improve my speed, better my scale and proportion by practicing more 3D model drawing.
Colour Rendering
After we complete our sketch we used the tracing paper to copy the outline so that we could render it with watercolours. Since it is not a 2D picture we had to choose the colours that was similar to the model and it was mostly light tones.
Reflection
The past two weeks we have down observational drawing which has helped mainly improve my proportion. Even though I find the 2D grid drawing technique easier I still enjoy drawing 3D models.
The advantage we have with 3D model drawing is we can choose to see the complete form and then decide which angle to draw from whereas in 2D pictures we cannot change the picture to get a 360 degree view. The group competition and critique has given me confidence in my drawing ability.
I would at least like to draw 2 to 3 drawings a week and once I am comfortable with it I may try to increase my speed by setting a timer.
