Week 3: Experimentation and Generation of Ideas
Introduction
In our week three, we experimented with the concertina sketchbook. My first attempt on mark making was not the result I was expecting. I poured in too much black paint which spread out and later but in some white paint. Since it was not completely dried it turned into a grey shade.
As you can see in the picture above; my concertina sketchbook has-
-It has a lot of negative space.
-It has certain smudged out positive space.
-There are a lot of grey space as well.
-Lastly, it includes few patterns and texture.
My second attempt resulted in a balance between positive and negative space. It gave a lot of space for detailed drawing.
As you can see my second attempt above has-
-pattern in some areas.
-lots of negative space.
-grey lines and smudges.
-very little positive space.
My concertina sketchbook
This is a scanned copy of my concertina sketchbook. I have attached both my attempts at mark making and fold it horizontally. The video below shows my explanation of how I would like to continue with the concertina sketchbook and it's development.
I can use Photoshop to do digital editing and improve my concertina sketchbook.
Reflective Writing
I did not know what a concertina sketchbook was before and now I am able to make one and learn ways to improvement it. The process thought me a lot about mark making, tone, texture and the necessity for free-hand drawing.
There were instances were I made mistakes such as adding excess black paint and eventually I learnt how to bring negative space back. The keywords I was able to relate to my concertina sketchbook were surrealism, decayed, texture and detail. I have unintentionally started branching out to surrealism which might give me an opportunity to learn more about introducing it in architecture. It also gives me a chance to research how surrealism has been used so far in the field of architecture.
