Week 1: Responding to the Brief

The collection of pictures I have taken are of doors. The different types of doors. My collection consists of doorways that are inspired by the Gothic style and doorways that have evolved through time.

As you can see the first photograph has a very detailed archway which can grab a lot of people's attention whereas the second photograph has a an archway where only bricks are used. The use of one material reminds me of Sigurd Lewrentz's St. Peter's Church where he used one material (brick) to build the church.

The third photo looks simple but a closer look brings out the defined lines on the windows which are right above the door. This design of door reminds me of the Roman style of architecture.

The 2 photos above have a similar door design with a small semi-circle above. The difference in both the photos are that the first photo has a double door while the second photograph has two doors beside each other. The placement of two or more doors always has an impact on the building or structure it is attached to.

For example, the first picture where 2 doors are placed; with the first one having a detailed archway which leads to the second door that has glass panels which gives away the interior. This positioning of doors makes you curious of what could be inside.

The photo above shows a design where there is an emphasis on the entrance not only on the door. The Pagoda Lantern hung above highlights the entrance. There can be many such things that can be hung above the door to enhance the design.

Reflective Writing

Taking photos for a collection gave me a sense of direction. I now have an idea of where I can take my mini-project. The monochromatic theme will make us understand more in detail about the design principles and formal elements. As I continued searching for different door design I found that every door, though they look similar, have something unique only to itself. Many of the door designs in Nottingham have a subtle Gothic style to it. Most of the doors are symmetrical and balanced.

The designs on the door reminds me of my home. My house has a similar door but it is unique since the handle on my door has a lot of detail.
